To all opposed to culling as a means to reduce Deer-Vehicle Accidents (DVAs):
Following is a fairly objective assessment of the various Deer-Vehicle Accident (DVA) reduction techniques, which basically boils down to Lethal (sharpshooting, captive-bolting and hunting) versus Non-Lethal (fencing assisted by a broad range of chemical and audio deterrents/repellents, and, if necessary, remotely-administered contraception).
A couple of specific points:
One, that fencing includes underpasses and overpasses as integral parts. The picture above shows the need for such constructs, in the absence of which wildlife would be forced to cross highways by cross-highways.
Two, on the cost of fencing. The article cites example of more than $30,000 per mile, whereas I cited an average of $12,000-$15,000 per mile in my article titled Non-Lethal Integrated Deer Strategy. This is because the expensive fences are for long high-volume highways, and there are much less expensive and still effective fencing, including high-tensile wire fencing for minor roads and electric fencing for farms and private properties.
This article clearly shows the ineffectiveness of the lethal methods in reducing DVAs, versus the effectiveness of the Non Lethal Integrated Deer Strategy..
